Vocas officially selected Sony F65 dealer

Vocas Sales & Services is selected as one of 6 exclusive European Sony dealers for the sales and support of Sony’s latest high-end digital cinematography camera, the Sony F65.
The sensor
The Sony F65 utilizes a unique super-35mm size 8K CMOS sensor, with over 20M pixels, to establish a 4K picture. Thanks to this pixel overhead the camera is capable of capturing more color details than any other camera currently in the market (it’s measured to be even bigger than film stock). By doing so it is the first camera with a color-space accordingly to the Academy of Motion Picture & Arts - Academy Color Enoding Specification (AMPAS-ACES) norm!
Mechanical shutter
The camera has got a dynamic range of 14 stops and a frame rate that can vary between 1-120fps. It is also one of the few cameras in the market that has got an option for a built-in mechanical shutter. The advantage of the mechanical shutter is that the rolling-shutter phenomenon (which is typical for CMOS sensors) will be eliminated. Synchronizing two cameras in a 3D rig will also be much easier due to this mechanical shutter.
Aspect ratio
The aspect ratio of the sensor is based on the DCI projection standard of 1:1.9 (4096 x 2160 or 2048 x 1080). If we take into account the high resolution of the camera we can use this aspect ratio as the start of our wanted aspect ratio, for example: 1.33, 1:1.66, 1:1.85, 1:1.78, 1:2.35 spherical, 1.3x anamorphic and 2x (cropped) anamorphic.
Recording
For recording the SRMemory is chosen by using an SR-R4 memory recorder. The memory cards do come in various versions which differ in size and speed and fit into existing workflows of (amongst others): Blackmagic, Avid, Adobe, Colorfront, AJA, Quantel and Sony Vegas.
The highest recording level will be 16-bit 4K (linear) RAW recording. As this will be an overkill for some applications there are other recording formats as well of course. These are all based on the SRMASTER format and can be chosen for 10 of 12 bit @ 220 Mbps up to 880 Mbps bitrates. All these with codec's we are familiar with for years and are known of HDCAM-SR.
Introduction package
For a smooth introduction SONY made an attractive package. With this package you can immediately start recording and run your postproduction in 16-bits RAW 4K. All the hardware needed for this is included in this package.
The introduction package consists of the following:
- Sony F65 Camera with mechanical shutter
- Sony HDVF-C30RW Color viewfinder
- Click-on Sony SR-R4 Digital recorder
- Sony 256GB SRMemory memorycard
- Sony SR-PC4 Data Transfer Unit.
Future developments
At this moment it looks that users will be able to start recording at 16-bit 4k RAW at the moment of the first deliveries. This is estimated to be in January. In the following months various (free) software updates will make more and more frame rates and recording formats available.
Planning is scheduled as shown below:
January 2012, Introduction, 16-bit 4K RAW @ 23.98p / 24p / 25p / 29.97p / 59.94p & 60p;
February 2012, “Beta version” of HD recording using the SR codec @ 440Mb/s and 4:4:4 @ 23.98p / 24p / 25p / 29.97p;
April 2012, HD recording including 880Mb/s & 220Mb/s and 4:2:2 options. Frame ramping of 1-60fps in RAW and SR recording;
Summer 2012, High speed recording of 61-120fps for all recording options.
